FAQ

Can I use my extended-health benefits for counselling?

Many extended-health benefit plans provide coverage for counselling services; however, coverage varies by insurer and individual policy. Clients are encouraged to confirm which professional designations are covered under their plan before booking. Where direct billing is available, MnM’s Counselling & Wellness may be able to submit eligible claims directly. Otherwise, a detailed receipt can be provided for clients to submit to their insurance provider for possible reimbursement.

What happens during the free 20-minute consultation?

The complimentary consultation is a chance to briefly discuss what brings you to counselling, what you’re hoping for, and any questions you have about approach, fees, availability, or virtual sessions. It also gives us both an opportunity to see whether working together feels like a good fit.

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on before starting counselling?

No. Many people begin counselling knowing only that something feels difficult, overwhelming, or stuck. We can work together to clarify what’s happening and identify goals as the counselling process unfolds.

How do virtual counselling sessions work?

Sessions take place online through a secure virtual platform. You can attend from a private location that feels comfortable to you. For safety and continuity of care, your current physical location and a reliable contact number may be confirmed during virtual sessions.

What concerns can I bring to counselling?

Clients may seek support for anxiety, stress, low mood, emotional regulation, self-esteem, difficult life experiences, relationships, parenting, grief, life transitions, communication, and personal growth. You do not need to fit neatly into a specific category to reach out.

What counselling approaches do you use?

Counselling is tailored to the individual and may draw from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Person-Centred approaches, and Whole-Person & Experience-Informed Counselling.

How often will I attend counselling?

Frequency depends on your needs, goals, availability, and circumstances. Some clients begin weekly or every two weeks and adjust over time. We can discuss a schedule that feels realistic and helpful.

How long will I need counselling?

There is no set number of sessions. Some people come for short-term support around a specific concern, while others choose longer-term counselling. We can regularly review your goals and whether counselling continues to feel useful.

Can I use my extended-health benefits?

Many extended-health plans provide counselling coverage, but eligibility varies by insurer and individual policy. Clients are encouraged to confirm which professional designations are covered under their plan. Where available, direct billing may be offered; otherwise, a detailed receipt can be provided for possible reimbursement.

Do you offer sliding-scale fees?

A limited number of reduced-fee appointments may be available for clients experiencing financial barriers, including low-income and Indigenous individuals and families. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to discuss current availability.

What is your cancellation policy?

48 hours’ notice is required for cancellations or appointment changes. Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missed without notice, may be charged the session fee unless an exception is made.

Is counselling confidential?

Counselling is treated as confidential and information is handled according to applicable privacy law and professional standards. There are limited circumstances where information may need to be disclosed, such as certain legal requirements, child-protection concerns, or serious safety concerns. These limits are reviewed as part of informed consent.

Can parents be involved in a youth’s counselling?

Parent and caregiver involvement depends on the youth’s age, needs, consent capacity, safety considerations, and the goals of counselling. Confidentiality and information-sharing expectations will be discussed with both the youth and parent/caregiver.

What if I’m not sure whether counselling is right for me?

That’s exactly what the free 20-minute consultation is for. There is no pressure to book ongoing sessions. You can ask questions, talk briefly about what you’re looking for, and decide whether the service feels like the right fit.

Do I have to be in crisis to start counselling?

No. Counselling can also be helpful for personal growth, improving communication, understanding patterns, strengthening coping skills, navigating transitions, or simply having a supportive place to think things through.

Are virtual sessions appropriate for everyone?

Virtual counselling works well for many people, but it may not be the best option in every situation. If virtual care is not clinically appropriate or another service would better meet a client’s needs, this can be discussed and referral options may be considered.

Let’s take the first step together.
